Abandoned Outlet Mall

Accelerated Aging

On a crisp fall morning, I had the privilege of joining Amanda and Amanda from Amandabanoned on an urban exploration adventure to check out an abandoned outlet mall. This was my first trip like this, so I didn’t quite know what to expect.

It did not disappoint! Store after store of broken glass, water damage, broken window fronts, and graffiti, it was an astonishing state for what looked to be a once vibrant town center.

What caught my attention the most, evidenced by the number of pictures I took of it, was the broken tempered glass everywhere. Piles and piles of the small glass bits, designed to break in a safe manner which would only cause minor abrasions and nicks upon contact, as opposed to lacerations by the shards of plate glass. But in the early morning light, the small tempered glass bits shimmered like cubes of ice.

This site was not in its condition as a result of natural weathering and decay. Only shuttered for a few years, it is obvious that the vast majority of the destruction was by human hands. Clear hammer marks, clean saw cuts, and an apparent plasma torch or acetylene torch was put to work against the thick steel gate bars. Also the significant graffiti throughout the entire structure showed a wide range of skill and artistic sensibilities, ranging from dragons and waves to misspelled profanity.

Once again, huge shout-out to Amandabanoned for inviting me to join in on a fun adventure!
