Wolf’s Den Run
Tight and Technical Wheeling!
Recently, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) opened up a new off-road area for us to explore! This area is called Wolf’s Den.
It’s located near Kitzmiller, MD. It offers a decently large trail system, and is thickly wooded, and includes a lot of tight trails, and plenty of mud!
I went out with the CORE 4x4 club, as day trip out to the area. There is camping available out there as well, which is something I look forward to looking into in the future!
The trail was very tight, and it was obvious that it is not heavily trafficked. In fact, there were parts of the trail which were not even recognizable as part of the trail. It almost looked like we were blazing our own trails, but as we pushed through the brush, we did see the occasional trail marker, which told us we were on the right track.
The trails had some sections closed off, we guess due to trail maintenance, and ongoing studies by the wildlife folks to evaluate the trail system’s impact to the local environment. This was not marked on the maps available though, so there was a bit of track finding and exploring that had to be done, for us to get to our lunch spot and eventually out of the park.
With the tightness of the trail, there was a significant amount of “pinstriping” happening, where trees and branches on the sides of the trail scratch the sides of passing vehicles. For our off-roaders, it wasn’t that big of a deal, but something to certainly be mindful off if you are concerned about paint! All in all, a great trip, and we look forward to getting back out there again!
