Wrangler Axle Gears & Lockers
After going up in tire size to 34 inches, the Jeep really struggled for power. Being a Sport model, the gear ratio was 3.21, which is way too high for that large a tire. The Jeep struggled to maintain highway speed in 6th gear, and the slightest of grades would require a downshift. And it would bog down on acceleration. It was nearly undriveable.
The solution, regear. I had Paul Warren from World Tour Off Road install a new set of differential gears front and rear, to a lower gear ratio of 4.56. That dramatically improved the driveability of the Jeep. I had more power throughout the rev range, and could easily maintain highway speed. Also, off-road, the Jeep could crawl much better in low range due to the lower gears. So a plus all around.
Additionally, since he was already in there doing the regear, I had a set of selectable Eaton E-Lockers installed front and rear. Being able to lock to wheels left and right on command helps tremendously on challenges where a wheel loses traction and begins to spin. Locking them together maintains traction on the wheel that has grip, and the Jeep just crawls it’s way through nearly anything. I’ve only needed to use them on a few occasions, but it’s great peace of mind knowing that I have them ready to go whenever needed.
